Scotiabank Charity Challenge

Make a ‘Paws-itive’ Difference For Pet Therapy!

Did you know when pets visit people in hospitals and care facilities, residents and patients experience a reduction of pain and an overall calming effect? When pooches visit universities, students feel less homesick and stressed? And when children read aloud to furry friends their confidence increases and they tend to develop a love of reading?  Pets and Friends has been bringing the healing comfort of pet therapy to those in need in the Vancouver Lower Mainland for over 35 years.  And soon, we’ll be adding a new pet therapy program…for young readers!

For the second year, Pets and Friends will be participating in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge as one of the official charities! Scotiabank Charity Challenge is the largest, community-driven event to raise awareness. Our goal is to raise $8,000.00 and 100% of donations to TEAM PETS AND FRIENDS will go towards Pets and Friends’ mission of sharing the healing comfort and companionship of animals to meet the growing demand of pet therapy in our communities while supporting the launch of Pets and Friends’ R.E.A.D. Program.

This program takes specially trained dogs and their owners into schools and libraries where children have the opportunity to read aloud to these lovable pets.  Research has shown a significant improvement in reading and communication skills in children who have used this method.  Learn more!

We’d love to have you on our team,  so lace up and sign up for pet therapy!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I’m not a runner, can I walk or roll?
Absolutely!  You’ll be walking in the great company of many other Pets and Friends supporters.

I’m not a walker or runner, how can I help Pets and Friends reach the goal of $8,000.00?
Pets and Friends has a fundraising page on the Scotiabank Charity Challenge website that makes it easy to donate.  Give your friends, family and coworkers the opportunity to help bring the healing comfort of animal companionship through pet therapy visitations to those in need by sharing the link!  Pets and Friends will have competitions and prizes along the way to keep you pumped!

How much is the PAW-ticipant fee?
With our discounted charity code, registration is normally $34 for the 5K and $64 for the half marathon, but when you’re with TEAM PETS AND FRIENDS, we cover your registration fee.  We ask that you help fundraise with a goal of $300.00, which may seem like a lot of work to reach, but with all the tools provided to you, it’s shockingly easy!  Most people want to support a good cause, they just need to be asked. To register, email Lauren Salmon at lauren@petsandfriends.org

I’ve never fundraised before and am not sure how to get started.  Help!
Not to worry, we’ve got you covered!  We will provide you with email and Facebook post content that you can simply cut and paste into your email and send out to your contacts.  They will include links to the secure payment website so you don’t have to collect money at all.  Just put it out there!

I don’t like asking people for money but want to help meet the fundraising goal, what can I do?
We make it super simple to fundraise and are here to help. Just email Lauren at lauren@petsandfriends.org and we can figure out a fundraising strategy that works best for you!

I’ve never participated in a race like this.  Where do I go?  What do I need?
We’ll send you directions, maps, people to contact, parking info, just about everything you’ll need!

I’ve heard my company has a matching gifts program.  Can I use it?
Brilliant!  Yes, definitely.  Check with your company but most programs will match the dollar amount you have raised, sometimes capping it at a certain amount.  We have a guideline template you can use to send to your company.
